A journalist with a doctorate in history, Hung Chien-chao covered many an event that made history in Taiwan. Born and brought up in Taipei while Taiwan was under Japanese rule, he experienced the Pacific War, and witnessed China's reoccupation of the island. He worked as a correspondent first for the Voice of America and then the UPI, and joined the Central News Agency in 1971, retiring as its president in 1993. He now serves as director-general of the Taipei Representative Office in Italy, Taiwan's unofficial embassy in Rome
